If you ever want to have a miracle berry, which gains its name from its power to turn bitter tastes into sweet, you would not have to travel all the way to Ghana where it is cultivated mostly, but stop by the Green Garden Nursery at Mukkom. It is not just the miracle berry that you would find at the nursery but almost around 2,000 varieties of flora collected from various parts of the world. But the greatest attraction for you won’t be anything other than the curator of these plants, C Hussan, who is a nature lover and self-learned botanical handbook.
The nursery was started by Hussan in the year 2005 and in the last six years it has grown to one of the most noticed nurseries in the state. Hussan, who was a nature enthusiast from his childhood, always wanted to learn about plants and grow them. But fate had other plans in store for him. He went to Bangalore to work in a canteen in the 80’ s after completing his KGTE in Agriculture. “ Though I was working in a completely different environment in Bangalore, I was very much into learning about plants. I used to visit the botanical gardens in Bangalore regularly and learn about each of the plants there,” said Hussan.
It was in a turn of events that Hussan bought around 80 cents of land at his native place, Mukkom, and decided to open a nursery. He started to collect information about plants and how they are to be maintained from the internet and books. He travelled wide and far to botanical experts and agricultural universities to collect rare plants.
As his knowledge started to grow so did the plants he curated. At. Present, Hussan has got the largest number of fruit-bearing plant collection in the whole of Malabar with 120 Varities of fruits in his garden.
And most of than one variation within themselves. His Collection includes plants from Jamaica, Malasia, Thailand, China, Ghana and Pakistan.
“I am still experimenting with the art of planting and growing them. It takes a lot of observation and patience to build a garden. For me, it is something which is there in my blood,” Says Hussan.
